Racer News: Castaneda Wins in Second Round of the NorCal Championship

(Sonoma, CA) Troy Castaneda took the win in the second round of the Jim Russell Championship in difficult conditions. Rain covered the track for most of the day providing some great racing and some interesting strategies.

Starting the day the best way possible, Troy qualified his CRG on pole by .5 seconds. The track began to dry after qualifying thus making tire choice interesting for the pre-final. Deciding to play it safe Castaneda stayed with his rain tires, but one driver in the back took the risk and put on the slicks. Unfortunately for Troy, the slicks were the way to go as the track was too dry for rain tires. At the start of the race, Castaneda pulled gap from the rest of the field, but in the end was no match for the slick tires.

With the track staying dry for the rest of the day, everybody opted for the slick tires this time. Starting on the outside of a slippery turn 1, Troy took the whole shot and pulled out a gap ensuring him his second win of the season.

“Today was a lot of fun being able to drive in the rain,” said Castaneda. “The track dried up a lot more than I expected in the pre final, but nonetheless we were ready in the final.”

Castaneda leads the championship with two wins going into the third round which will take place Saturday, June 6th at Infineon Raceway.
